Spring has Sprung at Broadstone

Jude at Disney

Hello to my Camp Broadstone Family,

One of the things that I like so much about living in the mountains is that Spring arrives so slowly that I have time to really appreciate the appearance of flowers, birds, and leaves.  First there will be the wave of daffodils, then the next week you begin to hear new spring songs from the birds, then the yellow and pink of Forsythia and the fruit trees start as mere touches of color to become brighter almost on a daily basis.   Each spring day holds some new sight or sound to discover.

Of course here in the office spring seems to fly by in a flurry of interviews, hiring packets, program details and training development.   We look at each other and say,"Where did March go?" or "Is it really only a few weeks away from the first of our three staff trainings?"   We move through our days preparing for the upcoming summer with an increasing sense of excitement about spending our summer with our talented staff who will in turn be creating a magical experience for the campers.  Much like the slow arrival of a mountain spring one of the things I like about camp is the daily changes in the feel of the community as we make connections, share adventures, experience a more relaxed routine and appreciate the people surrounding and supporting us.  It’s subtle but the change by the end of the session is very apparent and something beautiful each of us share.

Camp is not that far away, so rub Aladdin’s lamp, click the heels of your ruby slippers three times, or wish upon a star.   Your wish to be back at Broadstone will happen very soon.

I look forward to seeing the faces of the returning campers and staff and welcoming the new folks into our wonderful Broadstone family.

Let the fun begin…

Jude

Despite Economy, Donations for Camper Scholarships Continue

We all know the economic news by heart, we hear it every night on the evening news.  I want to send a positive message that even in these uncertain times camper and staff alumni continued to give generously to the scholarship fund.  I can not thank enough  the 8 donors, all repeat donors over the past few years, for keeping the scholarship dream alive.   We were able to assist 9 families for the 2009 summer program. A tremendous heartfelt thanks from our assisted families goes out to the following  donors:

Camp Broadstone Hosts ASU Scholar Weekend

Camp Broadstone was proud to host our 12th ASU Scholar Weekend on April 29th. Scholar Weekend provides opportunities for academically gifted students in grades 8-12 to take short courses during weekend-long programs at a college or university. Students spent the weekend on the campus of Appalachian State University and at Camp Broadstone attending classes and having lots of fun! Courses introduce topics that might not be available in students’ local schools. Our most recent weekend’s courses provided new learning opportunities in courses entitled African Drumming, Crime Scene Investigation: Fact or Fiction, Exercise Physiology and Athletic Performance, as well as Exploring Photography: Art, Science, and the Creative Mind. Students explored these topics on an accelerated level with the guidance of Appalachian State University instructors and their assistants. The next Scholar Weekend will be in the Fall of 2009. Please contact Beth to receive registration information as soon as it is available.

Day Camp Expands in Second Year

Camp Broadstone is pleased to announce the Summer 2009 Day Camp Program for Academically Gifted Children is returning for its second year and has expanded to include students currently enrolled in the 3rd -6th grades.

Day Campers will participate in a sampling of the same wonderful adventure programs and exciting enrichment classes as our residential campers. Day Camp will be special, however, because each of the six sessions has its own theme. The schedule for each week will vary slightly to accommodate activities and programs that fit the theme. Because each week will be a new adventure, we welcome campers who would like to register for more than one session. The Broadstone Sampler weeks will follow the tradition of the residential sessions through a unique blend of enrichment classes, adventure activities, group problem solving activities and service learning projects. Blue Ridge Base Camp will engage campers with an exploration of the Southern Appalachians, from Valle Crucis to the Roan Mountain Highlands which will include the history, music and culture of this ecologically diverse region. Aquatic Adventures will immerse campers into water based adventures as they explore river, wetland and lake ecosystems. During Global Village Week campers will participate in a variety of cultural experiences from across the globe culminating in a multi-cultural fair.

Certification Class Collaboration a Success

Broadstone once again offered our Spring Certification Classes through Landmark Learning, one of the nation’s leading training centers for outdoor educators and emergency medical personnel. The courses included three Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Classes, one WFR Recertification, and one Wilderness First Aid Class. Two of the WFR classes were offered as courses for academic credit in collaboration with Appalachian State University’s Recreation Management Program and Outdoor Programs. We are pleased to announce that this collaboration has been so successful that we will offer similar classes during the next academic year. Please contact Nancy for more information.
