Summer Enrichment Programs
for Academically Gifted Youth:
Day Camp

collage

Overview

Day camp is similar in many ways to the residential camp; our shared focus is on encouraging positive social interaction, improving self-esteem and decision making, and promoting educational and physical growth through fun and challenging activities both on and off-camp. Day campers will participate in a sampling of the same wonderful adventure programs and exciting enrichment classes as our residential campers. Day camp will be special, however, because each of the six sessions has its own theme. The schedule for each week will vary slightly to accommodate activities and programs that fit the theme. Because each week will be a new adventure, we welcome campers who would like to register for more than one session. Similar to the Residential Camp, campers must meet the qualifications.

Ages / Grades

Broadstone's Day Camp is for current 3rd - 5th graders.

Themes

Rate per 1 week session: $250 (you are welcome to regsiter for multiple sessions)

Broadstone Sampler (Sessions 1, 3A): Get a taste of the Broadstone residential camp experience. Our activities are a blend of academic enrichment and exciting adventure activities. The enrichment classes differ each year but are always hands-on, engaging, and relate to an academic area. Last year's classes included Geology of the Blue Ridge, Africa, Arts & Crafts from Around the World, and Games and Activities from Different Cultures. This year's enrichment classes will be finalized in late spring. In our adventure activities campers learn how to communicate effectively and work interdependently while gaining self-confidence. The adventure activities may include a group problem solving course, alpine tower, climbing wall, or high ropes course experience.

The Wilds of Appalachia (Session 2A): Campers will be introduced to the natural history, folklore and music of the Southern Appalachians by taking a close-up look at one of the most ecologically diverse regions of the planet. Campers will participate in variety of hands-on activities at Camp Broadstone and local field experiences. This theme week will also service learning and climbing activities.

Night Moves (Session 2B): Campers will explore the crepuscular and nocturnal side of nature as they participate in a variety of daytime and nocturnal programs that culminate in an overnight at Camp Broadstone. Programs and activities will include: bats, star gazing, fireflies, night hike and nocturnal adaptations of the natural world. This theme week will also include service learning and climbing activities.

Amazing Adaptations (Session 3B): Each member of the plant and animal kingdom possesses unique adaptations, features or behaviors that enable it to survive its environment. This week campers will learn about how success and survival of individual species is linked to their specialized adaptations through a variety of hands-on activities at Camp Broadstone and through local field experiences. This theme week will also include service learning and climbing activities.
